Dot size follows fire radiative power (FRP) on a logarithmic scale, so a 2000 MW fire still reads bigger than a 200 MW one. Fires above 200 MW also carry a white ring.
⚠ FRP is not comparable between sensors: a 3 km Meteosat pixel sums a far larger area than a 375 m VIIRS one — measured median 16.2 MW against 4.2 MW for the same continent. Compare sizes within a sensor, not across them.
Two kinds of eyes. Polar satellites (VIIRS 375 m, MODIS 1 km) are sharp but pass only a few times a day. Meteosat (geostationary, ~3–5 km over Europe) is coarser but returns every 15 minutes — so it is usually the first to see a fire, and a point it has seen many times is far more credible than a single hit.
⚠ Meteosat sees Europe at a slant; towards the far north the angle gets too flat and sensitivity drops.
Extra layers (top right): burnt areas this season and latest, today’s fire danger (Fire Weather Index) and the European fuel map, all from EFFIS / GWIS (Copernicus, JRC). Regions are NUTS 2 from Eurostat, named in the local language.
Confidence is the satellite’s own judgement of the detection, and the sources word it differently: VIIRS gives a class (low / nominal / high), MODIS and Meteosat give a percentage. Most VIIRS detections are nominal.
⚠ A detection is a hot pixel, not a confirmed wildfire: industrial heat, gas flares and burning stubble look the same from orbit.
